Why do we love Halloween?
Halloween is approaching and we can already feel a bustling excitement. Pumpkins, ghosts and other decorations are out and the celebration is on everyone’s lips all over the world. Halloween is celebrated today by more people in more countries than ever before.
When we know that Halloween is a celebration of death and supernatural forces it might seem a bit weird. This leads us to our question: why do people actually love Halloween? Why do so many of us feel drawn to it? Why do we long for wild autumn nights when the bare trees cast terrible shadows on the walls of our bedrooms?
Facing our deeper angst with fun!
Scary moments and encounters can be fascinating thanks to adrenaline and other hormones released by your body. When you’re actually in danger and in fear you can’t enjoy this reaction of your body because it makes you escape the danger. Celebrating Halloween can be compared to watching a horror movie: you face scary situations but in a safe environment and this is much more fun!
Being someone else for one night
Halloween is a night when we are allowed to be different – in fact, encouraged to be someone else and not our regular selves and that’s also a reason why we love it. From the simple pleasure of playacting your favorite character to letting all your inhibitions behind you there are many reasons to like dressing up. On Halloween night you just have to put on a mask and step outside of yourself for a while, quite easy isn’t it?
