Oscar De La Renta
Renowned fashion designer was born in the Dominican Republic. Her mother shared with him at a very young age her interest for art. He moved to Madrid, Spain at the age of 18 to study art but ended up drawing sketches for great design houses such as Cristobal Balenciaga. He will then work for Couture houses like Lanvin, Dior and Elizabeth Arden before creating his own brand in 1965.
Far from being the kind of designer who made fashion all about him, he really understood what is at stake with clothes: make women look and feel their best. Known as a humble gentleman, he designed dress that reflected his extraordinary personality: optimistic, fun, sunny and romantic.
His incredibly elegant designs seemed to be made to hit the red carpet and enhanced women. It is not a surprise that De La Renta dressed most American First Ladies such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Hillary Clinton or Michelle Obama and celebrities as Sarah Jessica Parker, who compared his designs with “pure poetry” in the TV show Sex and the City.
Even with all the changes in fashion and the rise of minimalism, he would always keep something from Santo Domingo in his designs: bright colors, flowers… That is what made him such a unique designer.
