Your Smile, Your Best Accessory
The old adage “Smile and the world smiles with you” has been given a new meaning as a study reveals that people who smile appear younger.
In order to gain insight into how people estimate age researchers showed hundreds of participants thousands of different faces. Their most curious finding points to the fact that facial expressions play a role in determining age and that people who smile are often perceived as younger than they actually are.
This might be new information but it is hardly surprising. A smile is not just an expression of our emotions or thoughts, it is a social tool that we learn to use long before we have uttered our first words or taken our first steps. One kind smile almost unfailingly makes a positive impression and builds trust by conveying our good intentions.
The situations in which we can use this to our benefit go beyond posing for the perfect headshot. A smile can make us feel and appear more confident and more attractive and that combination alone puts us one step ahead in any social game, be it a business pitch or a first date. Add to this, the newfound facts that it can even make us look more youthful and we have the perfect accessory that nature has equipped us with at our birth.
